Thanks to a grant from His Heart Foundation, we are excited to announce that starting this fall we will be involving many of our K-5th grade students in the MentorSuccess program. This is a structured mentoring program that creates success for children. It does this by using community volunteer mentors to read with the students using scripted critical thinking and creative thinking questions to teach students character traits and proven success skills. The award-winning literature provided by the grant has been carefully screened and is highly engaging and creative. Our students will love it. The program makes mentoring as easy as 1-2-3.
This mentoring program is unique from other programs in that:
• It is structured so that students and mentors have carefully designed, individualized student folders with easily-followed instructions and prepared questions.
• It is customized to the students’ own self-identified interest areas and appropriate reading level. This should motivate students to want to read.
• It is focused on making the best use of the students’ and mentors’ time. The time spent on selected tasks will help the student succeed in the classroom and in life. The organized but flexible approach will help mentors see their time is productively used.
We will initially schedule mentoring sessions for the students over lunch times and in the after school program. As we get more mentors trained, we might expand the program further into the school day.
This is an ideal way to earn your annual 30 service hours per family! Sign up for mentor training. The first training is scheduled for August 23 from 4:00-6:00 pm in our CCA library/mentor center. We are calling this a pilot mentor training, as we want some volunteers who will come and field test the training and help us prepare for the initial mentor program starting September 11. You will learn more about the program and specifically how to use the student folder and literature questions. Then, later in September, there will be a second mentor training scheduled (tentatively September 27, 4:00-6:00 pm) to add more mentors, so we can start the larger program on October 9. Eventually, we want mentors to volunteer one hour a week.
How do I sign up? For the August 23, 4:00-6:00 training, please contact Dr. Jerry Willbur or by contacting us here at CCA. Please note: By participating in the two-hour training, you are not committing to being a mentor. We do hope, though, that once you experience the structure and purpose of the program, you will want to get involved and help us recruit other mentors!
